STATE FIRE BUILDING

TO COST ,£BO,OOO. A contract lias been let to Messrs. Ilnnsford and Mills ta erect Hie new building for tlic State Fire Insurance Department 011 the corner' of Lanibton Quay and Waring-Taylor Sheet,' from plans supplied by Messrs. Howard, Proiise and Summer. The building, which will be seven stories in height, will bo constructed on the latest American steel-frame principle, aiid the whole of the facade will be of Kairuru marbie, from the Takaka district, Nelson, 011 a brick basis.. The magnitude of the structure can be gathered from the fact that it will have a frontage to Lambton Quay of 104 feet, and one to Waring-Tavlor Street of 85 feet.

The cost of the building will bo approximately ,£BO,OOO. As most of the material has been practically secured, it is not anticipated that there will bo much delay in pushing 011 with the work. There is already a large stock of steel in "Wellington for the building, and two more shipments are on the water. The building was planned some six years ago, and its erection lias only been delayed on account of the war.' Its erection will take about twelve months, or more, according to circumstances. The contracting firm is th® one at present engaged on the erection of the new Parliamentary Buildinss.
