■ ■ « —.— WANGANUI V. WELLINGTON SOUTH, A twelvc-a-side match by telegraph between the above clubs was commenced on Saturday evening. A prompt start was made, and for a quarter of an hour moves went to and fro with a rapidity that augured well for the success of the contest. At this very early stage, however, a fault in the wire 'rendered further play impossible, as th<! teams were finable to got into touch with eacli other for tho rest of tho evening, to tho no smalt disappointment of both clubs. It is probable that this fixture will occupy the next two Saturday evenings, in which caso tho annual match between the Otago and Wellington clubs will be delayed a week. ■ WELLINGTON CHESS CLUB. Tho latest results in the Wellington Club's current championship tourney are as follow :-W. E. Mason won from Faulknor and also from Kelling, A. Clark won from L. Sim, Sim drew with uodtschalk, Barnes won from Fouhy and also from W. Mackay, Purchas won from Sim and also from E. S. Taylor, ajid Godtschalk won from ,A. Clark. Messrs. W. E. Mason, Purchas, Barnes, Davies, and - G. P., Anderson are lending in this con- " test. Messrs. Still and H. L. James, who have some games outstanding, are also in the running. Messrs. Barnes, D. m ,s''• E - S - T^oc > Faulknor, and W. White (Pntone) are unbeaten to date m the club's current Petherick tourney (handicap). The play in both contests has draggec somowhat latterly, but will probably liven up now that the club is meeting on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. THE NGAIO CLUB. The best tallies to date in the annual hnnuicap tourney of tho Ngaio Chess Club are as follow:—J. Lindsay, 5 wins, 1 loss; B. E. Hjcks, 4-1; Appleton, 2-0; Brooker, 4-2; J. A. Glasgow, 5-5; and A. S. Green, 3—3. Mr. Carman has had to retire from the contest owing to the curtailment in tho suburban railway service.' This tourney is about half finished, eacu competitor having twelve games to account for. Tho annual match Wgaio v. Working Men's Club is to bo played at an early date at tho rooms of tho latter club, provided that a start can I be made with the 'match at 6 p.m., the " present railway time-table rendering an earlier start than usual necessary.
