WINTER RACING

_4 CONCLUDING DAY BIG STEEPLECHASE WON BYBON KEVE REM FOTO SUCCESSFUL IN. HURDLES There was a high wind and incessant rain for the concluding day of the Wetlington Racing Willi's iV"iiitcr»Meeting at Trentham on Satuixla.y. 'llio elements, however, did not prevent a large crowd from wending its way to the course, and the lotalisatur turnover showed a large increase wneii compared with tlie two preceding days. 'j'ne racing was igain keen, and the big bteeplecnuse was another fine cou-it-si. lion Keve, who is on the up grade, and looks like being a better hoi-6« still at Kiccarton, hcured in prunouueed style at the end of the race. Coalition was not at home in the heavy K°' n ?> and h'i jumped badly. Vascular ran quite up to liis lorm ol the iir=t day, but he was no match for Bon Keve at a difference of 111b. Rewi Poto, who is also on the up grade, won the Final Hurdle rnco like a good horse, and his form was sulHcient to cause him to bo' well spoken ot in connection with the (Iraud .National Hurdles.

In the Winter Oats, Client, who was well fancied on the Iwo preceding days,, went out neglected on (lie machine, but at the finish lie won very decisively from the consistent, bin unlucky, Paddington Green and Bagdad. Gazi.|.ie, who was a good favourite, shaped well under his big weight, but Alteration again failed badly.

The Canzonet inquiry was resumed during the day, and was further adjourned until to-day.

Gang Awa' gave n taste of his versatility by scoring decisively in the Hack Hurdles, carrying a. big. weight. His splendid jumping was a big inctor towards his success, as it was to that of Lochella in the Hack Steeplechase. The 'Dunedin horse was making his first appearance in a steeplechase, .and his showing was distinctly good.

Parisian Diamond wound up the season with a victory, and his showing exemplified what an important item class is, and how. really difficult it is'to bring a top-* notch performer back to a second-rate lot.

The tofalisator stuff '.fas kept busy during the day, and the sum of .£40,480 was put through the machine,, making a total for the three days of ,£112,889. Last year the meeting, which was a twoday . one, realised i99,9G3 10s.

Barring the long delay before the start of the Winler Oais, the events were got off well to time.

Orleans and Mnnu were the withdrawals from the Talavera Hurdles, which was the opening event. The 1 public made Gang Awa' a good favourite, and the issue never looked in doubt, for the top weight jumped to tho front and led all the way. Minister accompanied him ,for a mile, but the favourite held him safely. Wild Pilgrim put in a run at tho last fence, but the top weight kept hiiu off, and won by a length. Sturdeo was a poor third, and Grafton Tot and. Munstcr wore next.

All started in the Onslow Handicap, five furlongs. Parisian Diamond, Madam Risto'ri, and Astinome wore all heavily backed, and in a lesser degree were Form Up and Betlshire. At the start Madam Ristori ,and Astinome •- led, and across tho bottom the pair wero well out from the lop weight. The last-named soon caught Madam Ristori, but Astinomo held on well. However, slio we'akened in the last fitly yards, and the favourite got up and wim by a neck. Redshiro finished well in third place, and then came Madam Ristori and Form Up.

Negative, Signature, and Grafton Tot declined their engagements in the Hnck ; •Steeplechase, Gaekwar starting a hot favourite. Manawapnngo made play for a mile and a half, whore Kurapai took charge, but down the back Lochella ran to 'him, and tho pair kept together to tho last fence, where Lochella came way and won easily. Mnnawapango was ten lengths away, and Gaekwar, who jumped badly, was the only other horse to finish. Torchy fell nt the post and vails, and Gwynne refused at the richer the second time. Tho winner was making his first appearance in a steeplechase, (Bid his showing was a good one. ■ Kyoto was the only scratching in the Crofton Handicap, Pretty Bobby going out favourite. Sacramento and Mann led to the half-mile, where the favourite •vas in the rear of a strung-out field. Tamo Fox took second place as they raced into the straight, and lie and' Sacramento left tho field. Over the last 100 yards Probity finished very fast and got up on the post. Tame Fox was h head away and Sacramento was two lengths further back. Manu, Rangi Aroha, and Fretty Bobby were the next to finish. Tho winner is one of tho Waikanne breed, and is by Bezonian from the New Zealand Cttp winner Tortulla. The vinner was unfunded, and gave the biggest return of the meeting.

Bern Keve was a good favourite for the Steeplechase, for which, Terchy and Troublesomo were scratched. As on the opening day the race was agnin a good ono to watch, and for the greater part, of the journey the field was hunched and nli were "jumping well. At the start Jferrie Lad and Polthogne made play, but tho former dipped badly "at a cou'nle" of fences. With two miles to go the order was Merry Lad, Poltkogue, Signature. Coalition, Bori fieve, and Vascular. At the haystack, the field were in pairs, and all were jumping well. The positions were the same at _ the stonewall, but at the water jump Signature ran into ' second phice. He tried to got off tho fence, but his rider restrained him, and got a cheer from "the crowd. At the top ricker Coalition made a faulty jump, and nenrly unseated his rider, who made a good recovery. Down the back tho field \&ith the exception of Coalition was bunched. At the haystack Vascular and Bon Reve were clear of Signature, and the firstnamed gained ground by a good jump. Merrife Lad fell at the next fence. At the last fence Bon Iteve joined Vascular, and having the pace of his opponent he came away in the straight and won .comfortably by three lengths. Signature was beaten off in third place, and thon came Coalition and Polthogue. at intervals.

. Speculation on the Final Hurdles was surprisingly even, and several of the runners were well backed. At the start, Loyal Arch and Movement again mado play, and led ai bunched field past Hie mile post. At ,tho half-mile, Yankee Jack had taker, charge, and he led to the last fence, where Loyal Arcli njjnin took charge. Sho was joined by Kewi Poto, and in the .race to the post the top-weight asserted herself, and won handily. Farnoa was close up third, and Cynic, who again jumped badly, was fourth. Multive was beaten off.

Vagabond, Hineamnru, Pretty Bobby, and Tirana were scratched for the Winter Oats. Gazique was favourite in a good-betting race. There was a lung delav at the start white the totalisator was adjusted, and a further delay with fractious horses, which put tho race twentyfive minutes behind. A £ood dispatch was effected. Damien and Hiero led Comment and a bunched field down tho back: The positions were unchanged at the half-mile, where Gold Kip and Gazique were handy to the leaders. Entering tho straight Hiero gave way, but Damien held on. Sweet Tipperary, Gold Kip, and Paddington Green joined Damien at the distance, but shortly afterwards Client shot out, and, though challenged by Paddingtnn Green, he hold on and won nicely by a length Bagdad finished fast in third place, and then came Gazique, Sir Rail*, nnd Potentiality.

Ilineaiuaru wa,s withdrawn from Mie Kia Ora Handicap, and the public made her stable companion, Canzone!, a good favourite, but heavy support was forthcoming for Tempo and several (.iliHrs, which allowed tiin Auckland horse to pay a false price. Eleiillus led into the straight, but (he favourite then took chargf and won nicely. Teniiw was. a fair third, and then 'camo 'field and Imaribbon. The performance of the winner was a good ono for a thi'ee-yee.v-old, and tho going,- which had become very heavy by this time, did not seem to affect him,,
