At a meeting of the.Wellington Executive of the Farmers''"Union, Mr. A. Howie, of Waverley. was. appointed to. the executive in place of Mr. E. Law, Shannon, who has resigned on account of his removal from the district. A resolution was received from the Pov- : erty Bay Executive 'irotesting against the - suggestion of the Board of Agriculture to declare the whole of the North Island an infected area'regarding cattle tick, and lirgin.i that only individual infected districts be declared' and •' quarantined, and that the Government take all and ' speedy menus to eradicate Ihe pest. After discussion, a resolution was carried' objecting to the Wellington Province being declared an infected''area,, necessitating all cattle exported, from the province being subject to inspection, as it is essenv tisllv- free from the cattle tick parasite. Reference was made by the president (Mr. G. L. Marshall), to the serious position of the frozen meat trade, and the 'ninny difficulties ahead of. the farmer if the stores were not cleared and shipments -got away hefore season's trade commenced. It was pointed out ' that more than one ship that had com<> to the Dominion, was half full of Australian meat, and therefore could not accept the quantity from New Zealand that | was promised. According to one member the Meat Trust must have something to sav in'influencing shipping in connection with New Zealand meat. Eventually it was resolved: "That this executive of the Farmers' Union deem the congestion of the, frozen meat trade to he a serious financial menace to the country, and urges the Government to impress upon the Imperial authorities the necessity of lifting 1 the meat before next June." It was resolved to forward the resolution to the Minister for Agriculture and to the Board of Agriculture. The report of delegates who attended the conference in Wellington, in connection with the shearers and shed hands, ■ demands was considered, arid their action regarding the rate for shearing approved. It was Tesolved to support the proposal that the rate of pay for shed hands be at per hour instead of per week. The president outlined what was being done ( in Canada in. the way. of experimenting with "illustration farms," whereby small farms were being utilised for experiments in different crops, etc., by experts. appointed by the Government, and the results had proved increased production all round. He trusted that something on the same line would be taken up by the Agricultural Department ', in New Zealand. Mr. Marshall wa9 requested by the meeting to bring a scheme before. ,the Dominion Conference with a view to further action being taken. A meeting of all branches north of Palmerston'North is to be convened for August to consider the formation of sub- ' provincial districts.
