A WELLINGTON HERO
CAPTAIN O. E. GALLIE, D.5.0., M.C. Brigadier-General C. G. Stewart has written to Mr. John Gallie, of Welling--1011, enclosing particulars of a. memorial service hold in St. Paul's Cathedral, London, on April 23, 1010, to "all ranks of the Royal Regiment of Artillery who have given their lives in the service of their King and country duringl the war 1914-1918." Mr.' Gnllie's son, Captain O. E.' Gallie, D.5.0., M.C., was it member of the 156 th Brigade, E.F.A., 33rd Divisional Artillery, and .was killed in action on 'December S, 1017. lit tho words of Bri-gadier-General Stewart, " Captain Gallie was "a most gallant officer, and one of those for whose example the Royal Regiment is deoply thankful and proud." Describing the memorial service, BrigadierGeneral Stewart states: "It was most impressive, and was attended by officers of all rnnks, many of whom came from far away, and Iho relatives of many of those who had fallen. 'The great cathedral was full to overflowing. Their Majesties tho King and Queen were there, also Sir Douglas Haig and General Horne. I saw one or two of the old 33rd Divisional Artillery, and certainly, as far as I was concerned, your son was very much one of those of whom I thought, as also was his colonel, Bernard Butler, who fell during the final advance, another of the most gallant of officers, whose example will, always livo in tho memory of those with whom lie served; I may say that the Bishop of Khartoum, in his address, specially referred to the desper-. ale fighting which look place at the llurd Battle of Ypres in the autumn of 1017, and at Pusscheiidaole. and the heroism of the artillery. He mentioned the gallant conduct of «n Australian heavy'battery under shell-fire, which* drew the praise of the batteries round about. I thought at once of your son and his battery, which twice won the highest, praise for' similar gallantry from entirely independent witnesses, and as I told you, I think, was reported to me officially, and for which your son was recommended for the Victoria Cross, which I always regret was not awarded."
