Sir Walter Buchanan, who is at present visiting England, will retire from tho directorate of the Wellington Meat Export Co., ltd., at tho forthcoming annual nipeting, ond will not be a candidate for re-election.

Sir Geo. Clifford, Bart., was yesterday re-elected president of the New Zealand liaeing Conference. Iligh tributes were passed to the excellent work Sir George Clifford had done for many years in the interests of the sport, and hopes were expressed that ho would long: be snared to continue the important duties lie had so ably fulfilled in the past.

Mr. E. J. Alien, who lias rctiredfrom the position of malinger of the Nelson branch ot' the Bank of New Zealand, was presented with a pair of silver fruit dishes by bis fellow-townsmen last week. Mr. Allen was in the service of the bank for forty-five and a half years.

The officer commanding Group V, Wellington Military District, has announced two changes in the instructional staff of the group. Sergeant-Major Ji E. Francis, who since 1914 ha<s been in charge of the Senior Cadets of No. IS area, has resigned, and is returning to civil life; while Sergeant-Major J. S lung, who, since 1915 lws been in charge of tbe Senior Cadets of No. 17 area, has been transferred to the post of regimen-tal-sergeant-major to the sth (Wellington) llegiment. Both officers have during tlio past few years ,done work that lias earned for them the highest approval of their superiors.

Advice has been received in Christchurch (states the "Sun") that the Eev. ,T. Bullock,, organising secretary of the Church of England • Men's Society, left England 'recently as chaplain jto the troopship Briton,' which is expected to arrive in the Dominion about July 2ti.

The Country Racing Clubs' Association, at its annual meeting last evening, carried a resolution expressing deep regret at. tho death during the past year of Mr. 0. C. Cooper, late steward of. the Masterton Racing Club.

Mr. S. Andrews, of the District Hailway Traffic Manager's office, Christchurch, has been appointed stntionmuster at Tininru.

Tho funeral of flio lato Mr. William Smith, managing director of the firm of Ktnilli and Smith, Ltd., took place yesterday at Ivarori Cemetery, the cortege being a lengthy one. The pall-bearers wore, members of the firm. The ehiof mourner was Mr. Alan Smith, only son of the deceased. The liev. Sir. Robertson Orr conducted the service at tho graveside. Among those present wero: Messrs. E. R. Mowbray (manager of the firm). A. Walker, G. Winder, It. B. (.(range, M. J. Brookes. W. R.'Pliniuicr, .T. Myers, I!. B. Mowbray, Captain G. G. Smith (marine superintendent), the staff of the firm, and .many other friends.
