■■.'PLANT BREEDING AND ""■'■ SELECTION .-.WORK AT CANTERBURY AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE. 3y Telegraph—Frcss Association. Christchurch, July 8. At a meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury Agricultural College a letter was read from tho Hon. IV. l>. S. Mac Donald, stating that the Government had decided to co-operate with the college in special work connected with agricultural advancement, particularly on tho lines of plant breeding and selection, and to provide a suitable subsidy in connection vith this co-operative work. The proposal was that the college authorities, in conjunction with the Department, should undertake the work of iioVition and experimental testing of pure lines of wheat and seed oats, tho Department to subsidise the college to the extent of ,£SOO Tier annum, -either in the shape of cash or partly in tho shape of furnishing an assistant to help in this special work. Later stngos of tho work would necessitate tho general testing- of pure linea of seeds to determine their value under varying soil and ciimatic conditions, and the provision of an adequate annual supply of seed ot approved value, which had been found to bo of improved quality, this part of the work to be carried out by the Department, by arrangement with reliable farmers in suitablo districts. The board d-reed to consider the matter, and adVise the ■Department of its decision.
