WINTER RACING AT TRENTHAM
THE OPENING DAY
VASCULAR WINS BIG STEEPLECHASE
EVENT KEENLY CONTESTED
Owing to tho absence of tho usual train facilities, tho attendance tit Trentham for the opening day of (he Wellington Racing Club's Winter Mooting yesterday was not-up to the standard cf previous years, but thoro was nbvcrtholess a very large gathering. Very soon after S a.m. -hundreds of motor-ear-; wended their way along' the Hutt Road. Tyre troubled were a fairly frequent cause rf etoppages, but on tho whole tho procession moved along very steadily. The iveather was perfect, and tho absence «f dust and wind made tlio rido out fnirly pleasant. Somo of tho conveyances failed to complete tho contracts entered into by their owners, hud many enthusiastic racegoers, who had for tho jnost part, paid the very high fare of for tho return journey, had to tramp somo miles on foot, casting blessings neither on the lorries nor on the Railway Department. Several Ministers of the Crown were present, including tho lions. Sir William Praser, W. D. S. Mac Donald, W. 11. Hemes; A: M. Myers, T. M. Wilford, and' D. H'. Gii-th-)'ie. The members of tho New Zealand Racing Conferonco were also present, andthere was a thoroughly representative fathering of owners iiom iul paTts of New Zealand. Tho racing was of a hieh order, and was quite up to the standard that Wellington racegoers are beginning io expect when they visit Trentham, Tho big Steeplechase- was a very pretty race to watch the whole way, and, barring' Vacuum, who was in trouble with tfx furlongs to go, any one of the remaining sir might jiave won insido thoi last !ialf-rnile. If thero woi'O one horse whose jumping stood out more than the others it was the dashing AVaimai. Therace can be said ■to have been d huge success, in as much, (is keen interest 1 was maintained the whole way, and the finish was very exciting. Most people thought that Coalition had won, but the judge decided' in favour of Vascular. The staying powers of the last-named horse greatly assisted him to win, while he was also nrobably more at homo iu tho iroing (ha'n was tho favourite, who,' l.owever, ranja distinctly creditable race, and whose-effort would have won a great many Wellington Steeplechases iu bygone years. The secretary, J[r. A. 13. Whyte, and Ins assistant, "Mr. J. M. Griffiths, had 'everything in working order, but keen regret was expressed that ihe 10s. machine for the use of insido patrons was not available. Probably the management i 'did not consider that tho attendanco would have been anything like as largo '.as it was. ' ' The totalisator etaff handtel the sum of' J23.5.172, compared with A'-12.30G on the first day of tho Winter (Meeting of last year. Throughout the day musical items were dispensed by the Trentham Band. The Trentham Hospital Ambulance was also in attendance, but, fortunately, its services were- not required. ' Of tho fourteen acceptors for the Hack Hurdles all but Munster' faced the startor. Yankee Jack, Loohella, the Porirua bracket, and Orleans were all well backed. At the start Gold Soult was left, and ho only cantered behind the field. Warmth led for six furlongs, when Signature took charge, and down ihe back Ynnkeo Jack, Tuticorn, and Knrapai wero most prominent of the others. Signature was still in charge piiteriiift the straight, but then Orleans came fast, and jumping the lash fence well clear he ran in a, comfortable winner- by three lengths. Signature bent Wild Pilgrim by a neck, and close up came Lochella, Yankee Jack, and Tigerland. Parisian Diamond and Eebekah ■ were .withdrawn, from the Stewards'•■•Handicap, leaving fourteen runners. Elocution and Jiatatim were backed in that order. Pdsiiigham and Comment wero in charge till the straight wa/reached, where Matatua shot out. Half-way down the runiiin? Old Gold and Elocution challenged Matatua, hut though Elocution finished \ve\\ she could ; not reach the leader, who won by half a length. Comment was the same distance away, and then came Old Gold. All but Chattanooga started in the Hack Steeples. Gaekwar wns favourite, but there was a good following for TorcliT and Manawaponga. Gwynne fell at tho first fence, but the others continued on for a while with Torchy in the lead. Going out of the straight, Gaekwar slipped and fell. l Manawaponga joined Torchy half a mile from home, and after a. good set to beat him by a couple of lengths. Grafton Tot was a poor third. Speculation was well distributed in the Trial Plate, for which the whole of the entrants faced tho starter. American Beauty was first out, but across the bottom Straiiee River took charge, and was clear entering the straight. Then Prince Hal challenged her, but had no. chance, Swanee Eiver winning comfortably. Tame Tax finished well in third place, lioval Exchange, who was last to loavo the mark, was close up fourth. When the numbers wero hoisted for tho Wellington Steeplechase it was found that Master Lupin, Merry Lad, and Signature were withdrawn. The betting took a wide range, and at the.' finish Coalition was a few pounds better favourite than Master Strowan and Troublesome. In the birdcage the whole field looked well, and no fault could be found with the condition of any of the runiiers. The barrier was used, and the field went off to a good start. Vacuum was first to show out, but Waiinai and Vascular headed him at the first jump, Waimai was out by. himself crossing the bottom, with Troublesome in the rear; Over the stone wall Coalition and Vascular were nearest to the leader. The lMsitious were much the same at the , water jump,, which all jumped well. ' Down the back the field bunched, and a eheet would have covered them as they took the post and rails. Waimai's brilliant jumping took him to the front again, and at the haystack he led ft hunched field, the jumping being of a high order. At the stone wall the second time Troublesome had taken second nlncc, but tho field bunched again ot the double, whore Troublesome ran off. Across the top Waiinai ran wide, and .Bon Eeve joined him in the lead, with Coalition handy. Down the back the trio were in a line, while Master Strowjoined him at the wicker, while Vascular, but Vacuum was tailed off. At the haystack the first five horses wero again in a cluster, and .excitement ran high. Master Slrmran made a faulty jump, nnd lost ground here, but Waimai gained a couple of lengths. However, Coalition joined him at tho wicked, while Vascular was close up. Coalition had Waimai's measure at the Inst fence, but once over Vascular joined him, and in a ding-dong struggle up the straight tho vair passed the post locked together. Vascular got tho verdict by a, narrow I margin, while Don Keve stayed on well, and got third place, bailing Waimai on the post. Master Strowan was several lengths away. Multive and Calma were the withdrawals from |-he Winter Hurdles. Cvnic and Omahii being Ihe public fancies. After a good start Loyal Arch led oycr-lho first fence, which the field negotiated superbly. Loyal Arch and Movement were in charge passing the stand, and led out of the straight, well tkav of Omahu and a bunched field, which had Thrace in the rear. With a mile to go I ho order was Loyal Arch. Movement, Seadown. Rewi Poto, and On'ii'iu. At the five furlongs T.oyal Arch and Movement were joined by Spado'.vii. and a furlong further Movement fjl hack, v/hiln Omahu and Parnoa wen. , ';;ovin,<? up. Loyal Arch, Oniah.u. and . • Hc.-u , . jv;n jumped the last fence together, but in the run Io the post Omahu easily ,wicefluiit:(! for Swulovn. Pnrnoa wns two Jeirth" away, and then came Loyal Arch and Rewi Polo, and Cynic. 'I'lip lasllauipd lost a lot of ground at his '.tnees. Ml started but Kilkee in the Parlia■r/lary Handicap. Alteration and '•ens If were the besl backed, but sev...of the others had bie followings. the start Gold Kin and liattlo Array ,-'i£(i'. and down (lie back they • put a ■ break on tho field, At the en furlongs
Alteration was well back, but tivo furlongs further ho had jjono up to iourtli place, liattlo Array and Gold Kip were still in charge as ihe straight was entered, mid liiittlu Array van going cuiufortably. Uver the last lurlong he aseerted himself, and won by a biiro length from Gold i(i|>, with All Over, who whs .tlwuys handy, a neck iu front of Athens 11. Then came Alteration and Client. Paddington Green, Crosswords, and Sir Agues wen a couple of lwiglJis behind Ibo field when the. barrier went up, and thsv ran in the rear the whole way. Home Hururifie was expressed that tile starter did not (jive tneni it, chance to join' the field. For tho To Aro Handicap the wlwle of tlio twenty accoptois ia<:«l liie starter. Guau.ico nnd Sensprito, were the public fanoies, hut both lailod to get a place. Achillion dolayed tho start for a considurablo tinio,. and iailetl to g«t away with ' tho others. Kyoto set a- fast pace, and led till well tlown the straight, wheio Dainty Step and hiiaribbon joined issuo. In a punishing linish the trio crossed the line together, Dainty Step getting tho verdict by n head from Iniaviblion, witu Kyoto a neck away. Jlanii was fourth. , DETAILS OF"THE.
