MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS AND HER LETTER
Sir, —I liavo been unable to find time to reply to Mr. J. 11. Campbells letter which appeared in your columns on .I my 1. I do not propose to follow Mr. Urn;)hell through a controversy on the history of the Elizabethan period. I have established the point which I desired to make, namely, that Queen Mary died ns ii traitor and not. for her faith. .Ml. Campbell admits that, nnd now wishes me to discuss the question «s to whether 1-lißabcth was a Protostnnt. iour corrospomleut admit* she was not a Romanist The Papal powers of her day had ,^ l noert, inl.v ns to her Protebnhsm. and set. themselves with imiyh « " »»R and intrigue lo dethrone her, '.ml to smother Protestantism. They.:Klj nk\ tlmt the one was a prior necesitj to he nlher desiral.lo end. They thought and acted upon the assumplion that Li «- beth wis a Protestant, at least in hei Snw of the Topo and in hor dwdnin or 10 Eoiiinn Church. Mr. Campbell s shy of quoting his ?"tl«oritios tor his statements. It would »>"L s! ock \° mam- of vour readers wore tlie> to pei- '" the much lwlamled and much used in Roman circles-Cohbetfe hwtory. I eupposo that there never was yntten a
more audacious travesty of British hi» tory. Mr. Campbell makes a whining appeal to Protestants because wo seek to set before the public the facts of history and the facts us they exist in our own country. Tho Federation enjoyed throe years of unmolested activity and publicity ere the Protestants were compelled to organise and to educate tho people of this country upon the intrusions of Romanism into the civic uml political life of the country. That tli/ Protestants approve cf the organisation the success of tho P.P.A. testifies; and Mr. Canvpboll has appealed too li'.lu. — I am. etc., HOWARD ELLIOTT. Wellington, July 5, .1919.
