HIDES AND TALLOW SALES
The fortnightly sale? of hides and tallow were held yesterday by the. various brokers. Messrs. Dalgety and Co. report that those lines which were not selected by tanners at schedule rates were submitted to auction and met with keen competition from the exporters present. Prices • for medium and lightweight cow showed a . slight advance on last sale's rates, whilst all other lines were about on a par. The tallow market is again very firm, ana . prices showed another advance on late - rates. Messrs. Levin and Co. report that ihry submitted a fair-sized catalogue to the usual attendance of buyers. Tho bulk of the catalogue was allocated to tanners at Government schedule prices. All lots not selected by tanners were submitted to auction. Messrs. Murray. Roberts, and Co. report that Hi"' offer»d 900 hides and calfskins. Satisfactory nnw were realised for the remainder of th» offcrines. Tallow was Arm with good
demand, especially for shipping lines. Messrs. Abraham and Williams, Ltd., Teport that they offered a large catalogue of hides and tai'ow. Tanners, as is now customary, cleared the bulk of the catalogue at the Government Echeduln rates, whilst the balanco of hides which they left again elicited very keen competition at far higher prices than the schedule rates, 'fallow was in keen demand at higher values. The whole of the catalotcuo was cleared at satisfactory prices. The New Zealand Farmers' Co-op. Distributing Co.. Ltd., report- a good offering of hides, calfskins,, and tallow. The bioding was still confined to tho exporters, the tanners' requirements being satisliefi under the option given them to purchase, prior to the sale. Prices realised for calfskins and hides were slightly below those obtained at last sale owing to a_ restricted competition, but some good lines of heifer hides were sold at advanced prices.. There was again a good demaii'l for tallow, especially for caslw, which brought about 10s. advance on last weeir The New Zealand Loan and Mercantil" Agency Company. Ltd., report that buyers competed eagerly for all lots of hides and calfskins loft after the tanners hod made their selections at- Government schedule prices. Prices at auction were in most cases Id. to ijd. above pohed-Jlc prices. Tallow and fat was eagerly competed for at last sales rates. The. range of prices was as under :- Hides-Ox heavy, 6010. up, 12id. to ISld.-, ox medium, 60-59, Hid. to 14d.: 01 light, 49 and' under, IOJd. to 14d.; cow heavy. 551b. and over, lid., to IM.\ cow light, under 42, lid. to 143 d.; cut. slippy and inferior, 7d. to 13id.; bull, stag, B}d. to lOJtt yearling (161b. to JWHA M. to 143d.s calf, superior (tin to 151b.]. 16d. to 24d.; calf, medium-good, 13d. to lijd.; calf, damaged. 9d. to 17Jd. .
