THE MILK BUSINESS

In his annual report for the year, Mr. F. W. Bawlinson, Inspector of Milk, to the city (under the Food and Drugs Act) says :— "The total number of sample' taken b> me for the purpose cf analysis is lffiO, The number complying with the regulations under the Sale of Food and Drugs Act toial IMS. Those that failed to comply with the regulations were 85, which shows a decided improvement on last year's figures. The samples not com. plying are made up as under:—,l4 contained added water (one being to the extent of 28 per cent.); 22 deficient in frits; 21 were fifalc; 7 were dirty; 1 contained blond; total. Sj.

"The results of the prosecutions for the year are:—Fines. ,£210; costs, JU3 Os. Cd.; total, JC253 !)s. Cd.

"One vendor who obstructed me while I was taking .i sample was proceeded against by the council and convicted nml fined .£5 and costs. The same vendor was convicted and fined JCIO and costs as tlio result of the sample obtained in tlio obstruction case mentioi'hl above. On analysis tho sample showed that n l'ish percentage of water had been added, being to the extent of 23 per cent. 'On three occasions I have found water being carried on the cart in a milk can, nnd on epcli occasion the vendors have ottered all sorts of excuses for the presence of same. However, the three samples taken have shown on analysis that tho water had somehow mysteriously found its way into the milk. During the year I have condomned, and had destroyed, a number of milk cans, when found to b* k an unfit condition in which to convoy milk for human, consumption. Tho time is premature to make a fair comparison with former years n.s to (he general improvement that may have been brought ,'ibout since the City Council milk supply scheme came fully into operation, dating back only to' January 21 last."
