RAILWAY FREIGHTS
INCREASES SAID TO BE CONTEMPLATED.' By Telegraph.—Spocial Correspondent. ' Palmerston North, July 3, Opportunity was taken by Jlr. Golding. ham at a special meeting of the Chambei o: Commerce to-day to refer to the matter ol railway freights. The Department had", he eaid, incr'eaeed freight rates during thf. war and had made increased profits, and it was absolutely certain that the Department contemplated making further increases. As a matter of fact they were working on tho proposed new tariff now. The increased railway freights penalised the inlaud towns, and it behoved the chamber to raise its voice in protest immediately, and not wait till the new tariff cume into operation. For all practical puiposes any increase in tho railway tariff must be borne almost entirely by people in inland towns. Jlr. Goldingham concluded by moving: "Th.it the chamoer views with serious concern the proposal to materially increase railway freights, as it simply means increased taxation on the population residing outside the seaports."
Yhe resolution, which was endorsed on all sides, was adopted, after a short dis. cussion. It was decided to forward copies of the resolution to all inland Chambers of Commerce for immediate action and to submit it to the Minister ana the General Manaser of Railways.
