AN INTERESTING COMPARISON
WELLINGTON PRICES IN 1906 Nearly thirteen years ago the Labour Department issued a poster showing "the prices of commodities in the four chief centres of Nov.- Zealand at 10 a.m. on August 29, 1906." A copy of this poster gives a vivid idea of the enormous increase that has taken place in the cost of living. The following table showe the prtces quoted by the Labour Department for Wellington in August, 1906, and the approximate present prices:— August, 1906. .Tub, 1919. Bread (21b. loaf) ... 3d. 5Jd". The huge increase in the price of fish is one of the notable features of the comparison. The rise in the price of oatmeal is not explainable on the basis of the price- of oats.
