ALLEGED ASSAULT ON A POLICE SERGEANT
TWO MEN COMMITTED FOE TKIAL; By Telegraph—Press Association. ' Wanganui, July 3. £T the Afneistrato's Court to-day two brouiers, ITny and Victor Smith, were charged with assaulting James Beid with intent to do him grievous bodily harm. In tlio courso of his evidence, Sergeant Reid stated that late on tho night of Jume H. he proceeded to the Wanganui East Town Hell, where a Church of England dance was in progress, and on reaching the vicinity lie had occasion to remonstrate with two men for using bad language. A bystander Tntervened, and witness managed to reach his home, where he collapsp(". Witness positively identified one ol li?i assailants.
Medical evidence was given that Sergeant Keid wae admitted to the Public Hospital suffering from concussion of the Wain. It. was eight days before lie left Tie institution, and he would not be able to resume police duty ioi- several months. Both the accused were committed for trial at the Supreme Court.
