Dv. R. U. Makgill, District Health Officer, has arrived in Wellington from Auckland. Upon his return to the Public Health Department, Dr. Jlaligi 11 relinquished the appointment in the Defence Forces of Assistant Director of Medical Services (sanitary). He has been appointed honorary specialist sanitary officer, Auckland Military District.

iA. Press Association 'telegram from Wancairoi announces the death of Mr. George H. Dickson, engineer of the VVaitotara County Council; aged G7.

Lieutenant W. T. Pethybridge, M.M., of Devonport, is returning to New Zealand by the hospital ship Marama Ho left for the front with the .Seventh Reinforcements, and saw continuous service on the Western front, gaining the Military Medal at Messines. He has been for some time in tho Walton Hospital, and has undergone various operations, rendered necessary by the effects ot gas.

A telegram has been received by Mr. Thomas Forsyth, general manager of Tβ Aro House, announcing tho sudden death in Dimedin on Wednesday of Mr. W H. Smith, who was a prominent figure in the retail soft goods trado in Wellington Some years ago. Tho late Mr. Smith who was about 50 yeare of age, arrived from London in 1898 to become general manager of Te Aro House, and lie retained the position until 1906, when he returned to the Old Country, and was appointed to a managership in coniioc lion with the business of Thursby s, Ltd., at Newcastlc-on-Tyne. Finding the inglish climate too rigorous, ho came back to New Zealand after being away from it for two years, to take over the management of the Mutual Stores, Ltd., Dunodin, a position ho continued to hold until his death. He has left a widow ami a son (Mr. Harold Smith, architect, who practised at luvereargill, and who is now absent from' the Dominion as a member of the New Zealand Forces). The Sate Mr. Smith's only daughter died suddenly in Dimedin two or three years ago .

Tho death is announced of Mr. H. A. Hopkins, barrister and solicitor, of Hamilton.

Mr John Smith, of, Thames, died recNitly ivt tho ago of 77. Hβ was one of the early settlers on the goldhclds, und was promineut in musical circles.
