INSTITUTE OLD BOYS V. PORIRUA
Institute travelled to Porirua to play the local team,' the result being a win for Porirua by the narrow margin of one goal to nil. Both teams took the field at full strength, Porirua being strengthened by the inclusion ,of Cross at back, l'arata kicked off, but Institute attacked per medium of M'Arthur, who sent on to Porter, Wallis relieving. The Porirua forwards tried hard to. get going, but could make little impression on the Institute halves, especially M'Girr. who was in great form. Crane next secured' ;vnd passed to . Halley. Thompson cleverly dispossessing the latter of the ball, and sent ahead to Eastwood. Bell relieving the pressure. M'Girr secured, and passed to Porter, who beat Wallis, and shot from close in, the ball striking the crossbar and going over. It was a narrow escape for Wi Neera and' Porirua. - The play of the local team improved after this. Their halves wero playing a hard game, but their forwards lacked combination, the Institute halves having little. difficulty iu holding them, and when they did manage, to get past them, Wanden and Bell were always equal to tho occasion. Tho footwork of the Institute forwards was a treat to watch, Porter, and Smith especially combining well. Smith time and again beat Whitehouso and Wallis, and on one occasion he 6ent in a fine shot. Wi Nee™ briuging oil a great save. Mair was next prominent with a good run and centre, Bell clearing in splendid style. Crane let Cohen away, and ho passed to Halley, who beat Cross in the sprint for the ball, and 'sent .into goal; the ball missing the post by inches. The ■ Institute forwards' could do everything but score. M'Girr looked as if lie would do so on one occasion, but offside robbed him of a. good opportunity. Mair was again .prominent with a clever run, his final shot striking the post and.going behind. Half-time . sounded without either side being able to register . a score. Porirua were seen to much better advantage in tho second liftlf—they, were out to win, and played with great determination. Whitehouso and Thompson let'their forwards away-on many occasions. but M'Girr anil Bell, repeatedly, transferred play to the Porirua territory. Success at last crowned the efforts of tho local team. Windley sent in a shot from-thirty yards out,-and the ball swerved, struck the insido of tho post,-.-and went .through, nuicli to .the chagrin of .Tarrant, who thought tho ball was going past. It was a lucky shot, no 'one being moro surprised than Windley. Institute rallied, Halley send-ing-in some lovely centres, danger.; .always being averted in the nick of time by Cross-and Wallis. From one ,of Halle.v'a orosses Honston secured and sent in a hot ejiot, Wi Neera saving bril. lirintly at • the ■ expense of a corner.. Whitehouse set Mair away, and he beat Cohen and Wanden, his final shot striking tho'crossbar. Bell cleared, but Institute came again. Houston 1 , wrongly being pulled up for offside when in a iavourablo position. The referee realised his mistake, and instead of bouncing the ball gave Porirua the free kick. M'Girr attain sent liis forwards ahead, and M'Arthur secuied, and 6ent to Porter, who' beat Wallis, but lost a good scoriug chanco through dallying 100 long with the ball in front of goal, Cross clearing. From -this on tho game was very fast, the ball travelling rapidly from end to end. ■ Just on time M'Girr, with a great individual effort, dribbled the ball from midfichh • Ho beat opponent after opponent. and was only robbed of the, ball when lie was iii the act of shooting a few yards from goal. The whistlesounded shortly afterwards, Porirua retiring victors by one goal to nil. The Porirua forwards were scrappy. Thompson and Whitehouse were _ their best halves, and Cross and Wallis, combined with'the brilliant plav of-AVj Neera iu goal, saved'their side. Bell .was (lie best back on' the field. The same applies to M'Girr, who was- head and shoulders above tho other halves. The Institute/forwards -combined well, and did everything but score.
