Mr. J. C. Higginbothanv ("Orme Agnus"), novelist, has died at Wareham, Dorset, where he was formerly a Board Sdhool teacher. His best-known books are "Sarah Tuldo'n," "Jan Oxber," and "Nance of Manchester." He was a native of Cheshire, and could thus employ Northern and Southern dialects with equal facility, but he excelled in the delineation of homely Dorset, characters. The death is announced of Sir James Mackenzie Davidson, who since 161)7 had devoted his attention to X-ray work, a field in which he gained high- distinction. He invented a precise method for localising bullets and other foreign bodies by means of X-rays, which proved of inestimable benefit in the South African war, as well as in the recent European conflict. Dr. James -Whitford Bashford, a bishop of the American Methodist Episcopal Church since 1304, lias died. He had spent most of his episcopal career in China. He organised in 1907-8 tho centennial thankofffiring of iE120,000 for missionary work in that country, and was an active leader in the relief of the famine of 1907.
