June 27. Lord Birkenhead, in introducing the Housing Bill in the House of Lords, said the problem was one of staggering gravity. Lord Downham emphasised the emergency character of the measure. The country was heading straight for national disaster unless it reverted to private building as soon as possible. He added that the London County Council has building 10,000 houses in ' the next two years. The council's estimato for building the first lot of four-roomed cottages was <£1056 each, including ,£2OO for land, roads, and sewers.. The provision of half a million houses reouired the raising of a sum of Cable Assn.
