CAR MILEAGE CHARGE
f CIT1" RAISES -ITS RATES.
From July 1 the Wellington City Corporation is increasing the car-mileage rate to the Karori and Alirouiar Borougiis id. 1" per car mile. This action on tlie part of the City Council, t'ue Mayor stages, is absolutely necessary .in view of the; nature of the heavy burdens being thrown upon, the city in connection with the! tramways undertaking, notably in tho rise in wages and the increased cost of coal and all manner of material .connected jwitk the work. The car-milo rates were to Karori Is. 2d. per mile, and_Mirawar Is. | Id. per mile. As the result, of tli ia extra charge it is on the cards that both boroughs concerned may readjust their, sections with a view .of meeting the frefch' liability. In connection with the city rates, the Mayor ' stated that they would probably have to consider the readjustment of farts on sections soon, but on bis recommendation at Thursday's meeting tlia council decided to postpone consideration, of the matter until they had the latest month's figures before them. The opinion; of most of ,the councillors is that some change will bo necessary in order to meet the very substantial increases in the cost of running tho service. They also agree that the suburbs which have the use of the city cars and power havo been fortunate in {jotting tlie power from the City Council at the pre-war rate right through" the period of the 'war, whereas the City < Corporation has had to meet a, variety of' increases in o>ery direotion.
