DEMANDS TO BE ISSUED IN AUGUST. ' In considering the increase in the rates struck by the City Council on Thursday evening, amounting to over jC2(i,OOO on what was collected last year (when a rise wits also nuulej, it is interesting to nolo the contributing factors. Por instance, there is a jump of .£SIOO in tho Hospital and Charitable Aid Board's levy, an increase which the board lias maintained was absolutely necessary to _ meet, tlio increased cost of this ever-growing institution. At the same time there are critics who have argued that there is extravagance in administration, which a tlior. ouglily competent business man could put his finger on and check, if not altogether stop. Be that as it may, the citizens of Wellington have >.o pay ujd. in the £ this year as against:.4).d. in the «C last year, and that is not all, for if there is a recrudescence of influenza the Government lias decided that the cost of lighting it shall fall upon the board, which in turn will have ,lo collect the amount involved from the Various contributing bodies. The general rate, which has been 2 i-lOd. in tlio J.' since .1008. lias been increased to 2UI. in the JJ, which incroasti will produce .C)!>,(>00. an amount. I hat will be used to meet the increased cost of the upkeep and maintenance of the cit.y generally. There is also .£SOOO (parr payment of r. .I'l.i.OUO subsidy) to be found for the new Wellington Technical College and the added cost of superannuation for the City Council employees. The sole reduction noted is that connected with the cily improvement loan, which is reduced from 2!l-200d. in the J: to °5-2ftod. fa saving of .MOO), on account of' the repayment, of .£25.009 of the lonu to be made in September, and reducing it to .(*O.OOO. The demands in connection with the new rates will be issued about the middle of August, the delay being-' due to tinlarge amount of computing work to be done because of the alterations made in the various heads under which properlyowners are rated. %
