AUTOMATIC TELEPHONES
PROGRESS OF THE INSTALLATION,
An inquiry was nmdo ycstorday_ as to how the installation of v tlio 'Western electric automatic telephone system was progressing at Courtenay Place. At one time it wag thought by the authorities that they would bo in a position to "cut over" about-the end of June, but owing to the non-arriva'l of some of the plant it is not likely that the Courtenay l'ltice station -jvill be. ready for. work until tho middle of August. The telephones have arrived in considerable quantities, but the dials for them are not yet to hand, though they are supposed now to be en route to New Zealand from America. 1 Another motor, as an auxiliary to the two already installed, has yet to come to hand. Mr. A. E. Shrimpton (Chief Telegraph Engineer) states that the Jfnsterton automatic system is working, very satisfactorily. Though warned not to do so, •it. seemed as though every subscriber in Masterton was ringing up at 10 o'e'*)ck on (he night of the "cut over," "just (o see how it'worked," and for an hour the. system was given a very hound test, which it stood up to splendidly.
