TRENCH WARFARE
THE PRINCIPLES EXPLAINED.
.'A lecture was delivered ilast evening at the Buckle Street Barracks, by • Lieut.ColonellUPuttick, D.S.O!,'to the oflicers of tho garrison, his subject being "Trenc'u Warfare." Lieut.-Colonel: Campbell presided. ' ; The lecturer said that trench warfare was'a phase of warfare where the opposing forces occupied highly-organised entrenched positions in the closest proximity to-cach other,, these distances being ..rarely! greater than 3(W yards and often ns small as 20 yards. Elaborate entanglements were .creeled in front -of all . . trenches.. , The'trenches themselves were » sited arid constructed ..with the greatest care. Carefully considered defence schemes outlining fhe course of action to, /be followed, in every conceivable situation were published. The wero defended with numerous ;machine-guns, 1/ewis guns, and. trench ■ mortars, and artillerv, which we're'ably at a moment s notice to lay a. wall of hro'in "No Alan's Land." Intercommunication ' was established J>y an'elaborate 'system of tele.'.phone, wireless,, power buzzer,, pigeons, 'visual signals, and^runners. Trench war- ' fare closely- resembled ba|tle outposts, the principles governing .its conduct being simple, but the application of the ' .principles as in all w;arfaro was difhcult. ; ■ ■■ ■: The lecturer,'in proceeding, gave very interesting details of'this class of warfare, illustrating his remarks with blackboard drawings. The'lecture was brimful of technicalities, interesting only to those ' with' militarj- training. The, lecturer ■ received a hearty-vote'of thanks. -
