A STRONG NAVY
LORD JELLICOE ON SEA SUPREMACY PREPARATION FOR WAR By TclesrapE—Preßs ABSOciation—CoDyrlsrht Sidney, June 26. Speaking at the Navy League dinner given in his honour, Lord Jellieoo insisted on the necessity of Britain tetainiiig a strong, navy. It must bo perfectly clear to all Britons that tho co-operation of all portions of the Empire was moic necessary now than ever lief ore. In Hs opinion that brotherlwort would result in the realisation of the responsibility of every portion of tho Empire towards the maintenance of the policemen of the sea —the British Navy. In any future war the, proper safeguarding of British trade would require a convoy system throughout the world. Tho assistance of- the overseas Dominions would lertamly then be necessary. The le&son he was trying to preach was "preparation for war." The British Empire depended more now than ever upon its naval supremacy. Preparation to give protection to the mercantile* niarmo was only one 6ide of lhe question.- Preparation to deal with enemy submarines was a far more complicated problem. Lord Jellicno urged the necessity for the establishment on nu efficient.basis of fuel supply stations.—Press Assn.
