$ A LIVELY MEETING. Tho following dispatch has been received by wireless 'from tho official reporter with the Governor-General (Atiu, 7 p.m., Sunday. June 22 (Western time):— His Excellency the Governor-General and party went ashore on Tuesday morning last at Rurotonga. The weather was tine, but on sea was a heavy swell, which, increasing, prevented tho party from re-boarding the ship till Thursday. Their Excellencies ilk the meantime wero the guests of the Resident .Commissioner. The remainder of the party were hospitably treated by the European residents. Tho experience* was much enjoyed as a pleasant bieak in the monotony of evenings on shipboard. On Tuesday the hospital was visited, and subsequently a 'party attended a native feast and an exhibition -jf dancing in Pa AriM's palace grounds. On the following day, AVednesdav, His Excellency and Dr. Pomare met all tho nrikis in conference. The arikis unanimously expressed tho fullest confidence nnd the highest esteem for Mr. Platts, the Resident Commissioner, and urged that, he remain. The arikis thanked Dr. Pomare for his advice 011 health Matters. and undertook to'carry out his suggestions. They disapproved of the request of a section of the European residents for representation 011 the Native Council. On Thursday His Excellency heard publicly a petition pvpsented him by six local traders, making various complaints against tho Administration. A large giithering of Europeans and natives was present, and a very full and frank discussion >.f many important matters followed. Mr. Platts defended at length the Administration. His Excellency had occasion to take strong exception to the action of a small section, who at one stage attempted to break up tho meeting in disorder. The general opinion is that the. meeting- cleared the atmosphere considerably, and will lead to good refeults. _ ! His Excellency presented Dr. Pomare's medal at each of the three Rarotongan schools. On Friday he arrived early in Ihe morning at Mangaia, where the school was opened six weeks ago. This was inspected.'and the party left in the afternoon, arriving at Maukoe at nine o'clock on Saturday morning. They embarked again at one o'clock, and arrived at Mitiaro at three. They were enthusiastioally welcomed at both places. Especially interesting were the. dances. Xitiaro has 110 pakehns yet. Ninetenths of the population, two hundred and fifty nalives, were dressed in white, making ah impressive and pretty scene at-tho landing. The Tutaiiekai left Mitiaro this morning, and has just arrived at Atiu, whence, she will go to Aitutaki. All the party are well and in excellent spirits.
