LINEN DEAL CRITICISED
GREAT LOSS TO THE TAXPAYER INVOLVED. London, June 20. Tlie newspapers, criticising Mr. Martin'e linea deal, says that it is equivalent to the world's supply for threo years. They point out that the Government has not protected the public against possible profiteering, though Mr. Martin purobased below cost, which will involve the taxpayer in a loss of several millions, and also release an enormous supply of linon which will havo an adverse effect on the Belfast linott and Manchester cotton trades. Mr. Martin contends that the Belfnst manufacturers insisted on carrying out their war contracts for aoroplano linon despite tho armistice, hoping to repurchase the enormous surplus at a big profit. Their oiler to tho Government was only 30 per cent. oE their contract price.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. .fit was reported on JTridny that the Government had eold to Mr. Leonard Martin forty million yards of linen originally intended for making aeroplane wings. Tho material is suitable for clothing and household purposes. Tho price realised was £4,000,000/1
