OTIRA TUNNEL WORKERS

NO INCREASE OF.PAY. Recently the Minister of Public Works (Sir William fraser) has been asked to grant increased wages to the men employed at tho Otira tunnel works. It was urged on behalf of the men that tho work was unpleasant, owing to the wetness of the tunnel, and that the residential conditions were not satisfactory. Sir William Fraser stated on Saturday that Cabinet had decided at a special meeting on the preceding afternoon not to taku any action in regard to increasing the wages of the tunnel workers. The Miuister mentioned that tho number of men employed at tho works had increased by seventeen during the last fortnight or so, and he hoped that a further substantial increase would take place shortly.
