MR. HOWARD ELLIOTT'S ASSERTIONS
Sir,—Mr. Howard Elliott would like your readers to believe him and not the Royal Scottish Museum about Queen iuary's letter according to his reply to it. What on earth has the present generation to trouble about things that happened 500 years ngo between royalties? It does not matter' much whether David Rizzio, the Italian secretary, to Quee'.i Mary, was high or low bred; he held a high position until he was stabbed either by Darnley or his friends. It would be more becoming of Mr. Elliott, seeing that ho is a minister of religion, to stick to plain fuels and not go around the country presenting his own special version of things. No wonder the P.P.A. nominee is always beaten at elections. There are many statements made by Mr. Howard Elliott which 1 would characterise in strong terms. At Otaki last week iie is reported to have said the Pope and the Church hindered the Allies' progress during the war. Does Mr. Elliott know how many Catholics from Great Britain, France, Italy, and Belgium were fighting for the Allies, and where would we have been if the Catholic of those countries had stood down? I leave tuat 1 to
yi'.tr readers to form their opinion. I cSii tell Mr. Elliott I do not behevo lus allegation that Sir James Allen made any compromise with the leaders of the Catholic Church. I see by to-day's paper Marshal I'och has gone to the front, and suggest that the Rev. Howard Elliott, P.l'.A., cable to our gracious King George and get him to stop Marshal Foch from going as he is n, staunch Catholic and send one of the P.l'.A. instead.-l am, etc., J. T. KENT. Reikorangi, June 16, 1911).
