MILKING SHORTHORN BREEDERS

HALF-YfiABLY MEETING OT? THE ASSOCIATION. (By Telegraph.-Special Reporter.) Palmerston North, June 18. The half-yearly meeting of the New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Breeders' Association was held to-day/Mr. J. Hodges (Wanganui) presiding. In welcoming members the chairman said lie was pleased to report that the association was making steady progress. The membership now numbered 520, and the entries in the Herd Book, Volume--111, now totalled 6700, making a total of S)IX)O. ■ Hβ urged inspectors to take every precaution against accepting animals not up to standard. Owing to their financial and numerical strength they were now in n. position to build up the breed to tho highest standard. A report from Blenheim stated that Shorthorns were becoming very popular with farmers in that district. Considerable discussion arose over the question of members being allowed to vote by proxy on any 'question on the order paper, also with regard to the election of officers. It was decided to alter the rules of the association to allow for voting by proxy at general meetings on notices of motion. A suggestion was put forward that in order to encourage breeding the policy of the association with regard to giving prizes should bo altered to allot points prizes instead of championships. It was pointed out in opposition that this did not allow for encouragement of the small farmer. It was nleo etated that there was a difference of opinion regarding tho right typo of animal required. It was decided to leave the matter of allocation of show prizes in tho hands of the council, with power to act. The question of electing official judges was left in the hands of the council. 'In this connection it was pointed out that those who were elected judges should discriminate between the dual purpose and'the milking strains. In reply it was stated that this state of affairs would be remedied in the courso of time. At present the association have not a standnrd to judge to. • . ■ . It was decided that judges be instructed not to award association prizes to dehorned animals born after June, 1919.
