SOLDIER SETTLEMENT

RAPID PROGRESS MADE. /

A statement regarding the progress of soldier settlement was made by the Minister of Lands (the Hon. D. H. Guthrie) yesterday. Up to date 1d24 soldiers have been settled on-796,50.1 acres of liuui. The. claims of 354 soldiers'" are -'under consideration, the area of land involved being 112,286' acres. The Lands Department has still available foi selection , 140,881 acres, and it has tinder. consideration with a view to' acquisition properties of a total area of 110,311 acres. A largo number of soldiers have been provided with homes under the purchase scheme. In all 937 soldiers have < obtained houses, and there are 497 claims awaiting final decision. The total moneys expended in the purchase of private and native lands for settlement of soldiers amount to approximately two millions and three-quarters. The total expenditure for the purchase of private and native- lands, for the purchase of dwellings, for the stocking and improvement of lands selected, together with commitments for the imrchase of private estates for individual soldiers or groups of soldiers, amounts to no less than =tM,G16,929.
