Tho Hon. D, If, Guthrie leaves tomorrow on a tour of the West Coast and iNelson districts. When he has completed this trip ho will have fulfilled his intention, formed when he took over the control of the Land* Department fifteen months ago, of making a personal inspection of the lauds of the Dominion. Mr. Guthrie will go first to. Marlborough district, then through Havelock overland to Nelson, mid then on to Motneka und.Glenhope. On the West Coaat he will visit every farming centre of importance, going right down to Ross, in South Wettlnnd. He expects to be absent from Wellington until July 2.
A Press Association telegram states that Mrs. U'Shea, a very old resident of Hawera, and mother of Archbishop O'Shea and Jlr. J. E. O'Shea, farmer, Ohangai, is dead, aged 85. Commissioner Howard, Chief of Staff of the Salvation Army, who arrived in New Zealand by the Niagara from America a fortnight ago alst Friday, has since paid visits of inspection to Auckland, Christcburch, Diincdin, and Wellington. He will leave for Australia by the first steamer, and will there hold jubilee congresses in five or fix of tho principal centres. Afterwards lie will proceed to India for an inspection oi the work there before returning to England. The Rev. I". H. Petrie, vicar of ihe Church of England at Johnsonville, has received notice of his appointment to ihe Rosenenth' parish, and will shortly take up his new position. The Bev. Jlr. Petrie, who lias taken a keen interest in all patriotic movements, was president of the Johnsonville I'atriolic Society. last night the Victoria ■College Conn-" cil confirmed the appointments of Miss Olive Salmon, Miss Dorothy Maclean, and Miss Catherine Braddock as temporary assistants in biology, English, ami philosophy respectively. In the course of the annual report of the Amateur Operatic Society reference is made to the death on' nctire service of Mr. David Kenny. "Mr. Kenny, says the report was the first conductor of the society and also one of its original members. His charming personality and ability endeared him to all." The report also regrets to record the death on active service of Mr. Decimus Bridge. Mr. A. Dnugal, manager and chief engineer for the Wellington ties Co., Ltd., returns to-day by the Mokoia from Auckland. Private A. Tidman, who is returning by the Prinzessin, left New Zealand in 1914, with the advance party for Samoa, and sailed again in 1915 with the Eighth lieinforcements. Before leaving for the front he was employed at tho Government Printing Office
Mr. James Watt, solicitor, of Wanganui, who recently suffered serious injuries as a result of a motor-car accident, is now able to get about <v little.
