AMATEUR OPERATIC SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Wellington Operatic Society was held in the society's rooms iast evening. Mr. A.'.W. Newton presided, and there was a large attendance of members. The annual report stated that during the' past season two opera*; were staged—"La Mascotte" and "The Gondoliers." The "Mascotte" season was eminently successful, and reached a high artistic level, particularly from a spectacular standpoint. The season of "The Gondoliers," which opened with eclat, gave promise of being similarly successful; but the epidemic intervened, and it was with the greatest difficulty that the seven nights' season was completed. In both productions the society was fortunate in having the continued benefit of Mr. Pollard's ekill and unique experience. The profit from the past season (two operas) amounted to .Gl3-1 ISs. sd. The statement of assets and liabilities show the society to bo in n. very satisfactory financial position. While the society possesses considerable property in costumes, scenery, and effects tho committee hare again considered it iidvisable to write their assets down ae nil.

The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr. Justice Herdman; vice-presidents, Hon. T. M. Wilford, Messrs. V. Lcvi, A. W. Newton, W. H. Atack and V. R. Meredith; committee, Messrs. A. E.Shaw, G. Bridge, Z. 'Wood, IT. Plimmer.'C. 11. Wyatt, H. M'Gregor, J. Eliot, C. Haiph, O. H. Green, Mrs. Jas. Hannah, Miss Saunders; hon. secretary, Mr. K. B. Vance; hon. treasurer, Afr. W. Fraser; hon. auditors, Messrs. Hunt and Menzio-s.

Tho matter of selecting an opera was left to the incoming committee.
