WAR TROPHIES
FOR WELLINGTON CITY.
Through the- courtesy of the Minister of Defence (Sir James Allen) the Mayor wishes to acknowledge" the receipt of lour German machine-guns and one trench mortar," which were captured by tho New Zealand Division in tho war. Of these trophies of the great conflict, one ma- # chine-gun and.the trench mortar, both in perfect condition, have been set up on either side of the landing of the mam stairway in the Town Hall, where they may now bo inspected by citizens who are interested. The maclunc-gun, mounted, on a very solid four-footed iron stand,' bears the inscription: "Captured by the Ist Battalion 'Wellington Infantry liegiment, 7/G/17." The trench mortar, which is a splendid piece of workmanship, is mounted on a circular steel platform, • which has a track so that tho mortar, without shifting tho base, may be pointed in any, given direction. This mortar was captured by the 2nd Battalion of tha New Zealand KiHe Brigade oil Juno 7, 1917. Another of the machine-guns, which is minus n 6tand, or base, is being fitted with ono for presentation to th« Roseneatli State School. The remaining two, 'also dismantled, havo yet to be allocated.
