BETTER ROAD ACCESS

TO ROSENEATH AND HATAITAI. A deputation of Hataitai and lioseneath residents waited upon the City Council last evening to urge better trunk road access to those suburbs from the city, on 'the lines ■ recommended by the City Engineer (Mr. W. H. Morton) bo-, fore the war. Mr. Burbidge, representing Wellington East, Hataitai, and Roseneath, said they wished to urge the provision of a better Toad approach to Roseneath. A schemo for a new Toad, approved by the Mayor and City Engineer, provided for a Tegrading of Hawker Street, tat that scheme could not bo gone on with owing to the war. The war was now' over, and they thought" that the 6cheme, whicl> provided for a new. road leading from Hawker Street to the Roseneath firo station and along tho Town Belt through Hataitai, functioning with the tramway, line at Boyd's Store at Kilbirnie, should be proceeded with. If such a road were provided it would carry practically the whole of the population of Roseneath and Hataitai. There had been mentioned a cable car. service to Roseneath, but they held that such a service would be unsatisfactory. A tramway line alonfj the road proposed would not only pay, but would open up a lot of good building land. ' .

• Mr. W. J. Gaudin pleaded that every citizen had a right to ask for reasonable access'to his home. Most peoplo had little idea of the growth of Hatnitai, particularly at Hataital North. What they wanted waa tramway communication, and though thoy might not get such an extension at present, they should at least he given a good road. At present they did not havo a goc-d road, and building was mad« more expensive .because of that. He trusted that the coapcil would treat this matter as a matter of the greatest urgency.

Major O'Sullivan said that ho had been over the proposed route of the road mentioned, and noticed many acres of good building land that were grown over with goree, yot the route was a very beautiful one.

The Mayor said the matter had onlv been held over because of tho disabilities of the war, and he was in favour of I lie work. TTo made it clear that the improvements of ono part of 1.110 city could not 'bo considered without taking into consideration the requiiements of the city as a whole. Ho gave the assurance that the mailer would receive the earnest consideration of the connqpi, and would be heard of when the general improvement scheme came down, which would not be very long.
