NEW TRAMWAY SECTIONS

CLYDE QUAY TO PIPITEA WHARF.

At last evening's meeting of tho Wellington City Council tho Tramways Committee recommended that the council take tho necessary steps to extend tho tramway system from Clyde Quay to the Pipitea Street Wharf by way of Wakefield Street and Jervois Quay. Such a wort would mean new doubletrack sections of line between the Oriental Bay-Clyde Quay line, and that point, on Jervois Quay where that thoroughfare junctions with Harris Street, and ■'"•lin from the junction of Waterloo <?fay and Ballanco Street, down Water-, 100 Quay as far as the Pipitea Wharf. The council's former intention wits, to continue the line right on to Davis Street, so that It would servo as an alternative complete double line right down to the Thorndon railway station and the carshed beyond. The report stated that the committee had already instructed the Acting Tramways Manager to report on an extension of tho Customhouse Quay line northward as far as a point opposite the Ferry Wharf in Waterloo Quay. ' Councillor C. -H. Chapman thought that the line to servo, the wharves and 'the waterside workers should be givsn precedence • over other proposed efrtansions. ■

Councillor R, A. • Wright said that there were others to serve equally with the waterside workers, arid he enumerated the many ■ proposals that were before the-council. He doubted if tho proposed line (travelling, by way of Waterloo and Jervois Quays) would relieve the traffic in Willis and Manners Streets. '

The Mayor said that a comprehensive report on tramway extensions .would bo brought down at the next meeting of the council.

Councillor Wright said" that he was very glad to hear - that the whole question was being gone into. ■ Councillor J: 0. Sliorlniul spoke strongly in favour of duplicating the line to Island Ba,v. Councillor M 7 .F.. Liickie expressed a gTave doubt, if the Government, with its numerous, lines of railway running aoross Waterloo Quay, would sanction a line down that thoroughfare. He was of opinion that the duplication of all trunk lines was one of the most important works to be carried out.

Councillor A. i!. Atkinson said he was not at all satisfied that this section was the supreme aud urgent need among tramway extensions.' He would like to know what the officers had to say about it. -He would move that the clause lie referred back to • the committee'.

Mr. T. Forsyth'seconded the motion, Mayor said he was surprised' at the attitude "of the council. But lie would not hesitate' to • refer .' the matter 1 back. Everyone knew the need there .was to. servo the ferry. boats, where there was always such heavy traffic. '

Councillor Luckie pointed out that the. clause referred to the Pipitea Wharf, which was 'away down by tho Post ana TelegTaph Department's stores. The Mayor:' "Well, make it to the Ferry Wharf. The position was that wo could get an Order-in-Council f o r this work, whereas it would take a very long time to get an Order for nn extension, say, to Northland. Anyhow, I am quito prepared to refer it back."

/Councillor Luckie explained that Councillor Atkinson, was not opposed to tho proposal. He only wished to he satisfied that this was the most- urgent work of all that was before tho council..

The Mayor: It takes two of you to make the explanation. Councillor Atkinson: It takes two of lis to understand it. (Laughter.)

On the motion being put to the council it was carried without a dissentient voice.
