TAXI-CAB LAWS
♦ —— . STANDARDISATION IJf MARCH, 1921. The By-laws Committed of tho City Council reported last evening:— "That the provisions of section 713, IC Clause 12 of tho Wellington City Bylaw No. 24, 1915, be brought into foroo after March 31, 1921, and that tho ownors of taxicabs bo notified accordingly. Tho clause deals with the standardisation of taxicabs. ■ Councillor M. F. Luckie, in support of: this olause, said that it was necessary to standardise cars in order to standardise taxi-meters. Their, motor export found that a very great deal of his timo was spent in going into tho matter of f««a, which would not be the case if oaoh wj were fitted with a taxi-motor, which would enable passengers to see cxwtlj what they had to pay. .•Councillor C. B. Norwood said ha thought the committee was interfering' unduly with the taxi-owners in insisting on a standard car, as different cars needed' for different purposes. Ho could Doli'see how. it affected public safety or anything else in having cars on tho roads with a different wheel base and different wheels. He pointed out that srpeodomelors could now be obtained to fit car 3 with any sized wheels. It was simply » matter of gearing. He would liko to si* the clause reported back. . Councillor J. O. Shorland supported Councillor Norwood, and moved that the clause be referred, back for mora cawful consideration. This'was agreed to.
