PAYMENT OF JURORS
NEW LEGISLATION READY.
The present low rato of payment to jurors was the subject of a letter ot complaint recently sent by Mr. I. J. Parr M.P., to the Minister of Justice. It was pointed out by Mr. I'arr that tno rate, which had stood at Bs. per day lor very many years,, was so low that service ■on a jury was a severe tax on working men. It might' happen that a man called on for jury work .would bo d - charged after half a day,-, forphich ho would receive 'only-45., and yet the man might not lie able to go to his work for the remainder of the day. Tho matter.-was brought undei us notico of the Minister (the Hon. 1. M. Wilford), who made the. following statement-. ''Cabinet the regulations relating to pay for juio s. An amendment can only bo made by legislation sanctioned by Parliament The question of pay for jurors has been brought by me before Cabinet, and Cabinet has agreed w th my rccommenda. Hon that the par should lie increased. increase, I have had drafted a Bill to make provision with respect to the payment of jurors. It is now. in print, a "m be submitted to Pari anient in the ensuing session. Nothing further can bs done." ■
