HURRICANE AND TIDAL WAVE IN TONGAN GROUP
» • I SEVERAL SMALL VESSELS. • WRECKED. ' By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, June 10. The Talune, which arrived this afternoon, brings farther news of the recent hurricane and tidal wave in the Tongan group. The most serious damage was' at Hnapai. There were three distinct tidal waves, (ho third going IS3 feet inland. Smaller waves followed for a period of twenty-four hours. Several small vessels were wrecked, and a Government lighter loaded with copra was washed to sea and wrecked on a reef six miles away, while another lighter was lost altogether. The American schooner Ottelia Fjord, which was loading timber,- had about 20.000 feet of her cargo washed away. All the Government premises on the beach were practically wrecked. At Nukualofa a store on the beach was gutted. Two small islands disappeared altogether. The estimated damage is jCIDM. No lives were lost.
