LOWER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL
A meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. There wero present; The Mayor (Mr. 13. P. Rishworth), Councillors W. Knight, W. lleldruni, A.. Macaekill, J. Mitchell, W. B. Hardy, A. J. Hobbs, A. .1. West, W. Cotton, and E. J; Guinuess. The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote advising that the Government had decided' to introduce legislation renewing (1) the provisions of section 30 of the Appropriation Act, 1918, (2) authorising local authorities to expend moneys on permanent peace memorials, and to borrow moneys for the purpose of peace memorials subject to a poll of the ratepayers, and pointed out that Government subsidies would not be paid in respect of permanent peace memorials.—Received. The Waihi Borough Council wrote asking the council's co-operation in affirming Die principle of payment of not less than £1 Is. per day to councillors engaged on municipal business, and also soliciting support to a resolution askiag tho Government to bring down legislation making Saturday the statutory weekly lialf-lioli-day.—Received. A. R. Astridgo wrote complaining of tho bad state of the footpath in Montague Street, and asked that something bo done. —The engineor reported that lie hud tho matter of repairs in hand. Mr. L. Gwilliam wrote resigning t liig appointment as assistant in tho Town Clerk's office. ' A letter was received from (ho Hutt River Board in referenco to a lease by tho council of four acres of lsuid at tho northern end of Gear Island.—A committee, consisting of Councillors Meldrum, Hardy, Ilobbs, and Mitchell, was Appointed to deal with tho matter. In reply to a letter from the secretary of tho 'Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, giving information as to expenditure on lower Hutt cases, it was resolved that tho board bo again written to asking for fuller information on the matter, the present information being considered unsatisfactory. A letter from tho Lower, Hutt branch of tho Now Zealand Labour Party protesting against the establishment of a prison camp in the Hutt Valley was received: Mr. .T. Prendevillo apnearnd on behalf of tho Rugby Football Union with reference to the' arrangements made by the council with the nnion for playing sonior matches at Lower Hutt. Tho original aVrangoment was that one senior match in each round be played, at tho Hutt, and that the council 1 should receive a portion of the gate money. _ It was finally decided to waive tho question of a senior match for the first round, but to ask that a senior match be played at Lower Hutt during tho second round. .The engineer's report stated that the total.quantity of gas purchased for the month of April was 1,776,000 cubic feet. The revenue derived from the cleaning of gas burners, ctc., had amounted to £12 Is. Gd. Tho report suggested the converting of the automatically-controlled street .lamps to hand-con trilled. The cost was estimated at £5 125.-The report was adopted. A motor-drivers license was granted to A. R. Wyatli, subject to the usual condition. It was decided that a tour of inspection of tho lxirough 1 be made on Saturday morning next. '
