, NOTES FROM VARIOUS CENTRES MANAWATU At a meeting of the Manawatu Philosophical Society at Palmcrston, at tlio week-end, a letter was received from tlio Minister of Lands in reference to a resolution passed at tho last meeting of tho society, 'in which the Government was urgQd to acquire the portion of land on ICapiti Island owned by tho Natives, or as un alternntivo that it be fenced oft' from tho rest of the island. The Minister stated that legislation was being prepared to .enable the Government to acquire this land. The reply .was considered by tho society to be very satisfactory. Mr. J. Murray was elected a member of tho council, and Messrs. A. H. M. Wright, M. H. Oram, and J. M. Collins members of the society. The newly-electod committee for_ tho West End School, Palmcrston North, met for the first time on Friday night. The secretary of tho Education Board notified that -Messrs. E. A. Ellis, E. Carpenter, A. M'Vicar, A. 31. Spilnian, and B. J. Just, had been appointed to fill the vacancies on tho committee, which wero not filled at tho annual meeting of householders. Mr. C. H. WO9DVILLE Tho Hon. D. G. Guthrie, Minister of Lands, paid a visit to Woodvillo at tho week-end, and received a number of deputations on jocal matters. Mr. Rudtlick, president of tho Chamber of Commerce, nsked tho Minister that in the event of any change in the headquarters of the electorate being made that the claims of Woodvillo as the centre tor the location of tho returning officer should not bo overlooked. Messrs. lluddick and Harris brought before the Minister's notice the desirability of completing the. Pohakeko track, which would bring the peoplo of Makuri 12 miles closer to the railway station. There had been a vote of dCiM on the Estimates for this work for somo years. On behalf of tho Keturnod Soldiers' Association, Captain Wardrop emphasised the need of opening up land in the district for soldier settlement, referring particularly to the Ormond Estate and a block in tho gorgo. He also pointed out the delays experienced by soldiers without capital in obtaining land. The Minister, in reply, remarked that a soldier was not barred on account of lack of capital and experience from taking up land, but thero were many difficulties in completing negotiations for the acquisition of lands, particularly in the case ofulocke in which Maoris woro interested. ' In indicating that the various matters referred to by the deputations would receive consideration, the Minister added that he could foresee difficulties with regard to the Gorgo Bcserve. ■ • , ■ The Woodvillo County Council lias received a letter from the Post and Telegraph Department, stating that the rural mail delivery could not he carried oil unless the receiving boxes were placed so that they were readily accessible from tho road, 'i'lie chairman explains that the council was desirous of helping the settlors, but that it would be liable for damages for any accident that might occur by the boxes being too near the road. Tho council has decided to obtain a legal opinion on the matter from the solicitor to the Counties Association.

M'intosh, senior telegraphist at Masterton, has been transferred to Christchurch. Miss I. lledward, telephone supervisor, goes to Dannevirke. Tho recent snap of cold weather has been responsible for a number of minor cases of influenza in Masterton. In the Wairarapa senior Rugby football matches on Saturday, Red Star defeated Carterton by 19 points to 3, and Gladstone beat Dalefield' by 22 points to 5. In the junior championship Featherdtoii defeated Red Star II by 8 points, to 7, and Pukio won from Carterton II by 22 points to nil.
