CADET N.C.O.'S

TRAINING FOR WELLINGTON LADS,

A-scene of activity, reminiscent of days before the war, was to bo witnessed at "the Garrison Hull on Thursday night;. The Territorials recently posted to the Garrison Artillery and Field Artillery were 011 parjitle,'.reepivi up preliminary instructions concerning their duties, and the training class for cadet non-commis-sioned officers was in progress. There were about 101) cadet n.c.o.'s in attendance, and the youths wove working hard under the direction of instructors drawn from the training camps. The training class for non-commissioned officers is a new undertaking, initiated by ilie officer commanding No. 5 Group (Captain \V. JI. Nell);.' ' The lads are lining instructed in infantry drill, musketry, and physical training of the kind used" in the latter stages of the war. They are to receive half-hour courses in the three subjects each week, the idea being that thoy shail qualify to impart the training they have received to their own units.

The training course occupied, the n.c.o.'s until i) p.m. on, Thursday. Then there was a shooting competition with ,2s! rides, the winner being Sergeant Billing, .No. 31 Company. The competition was keenly interesting, and it served to illustrate the need of it modern range at the Garrison Hall. Tho present vquipraent in this respect is obviously inadequate. The shooting was followed by a boxing competition. ■ Tho class is controlled by Captain Bell, assisted by Lieutenants Thomson and Shearnie. The instructors are as follow: Musketry—Sergeants-Major Henry, King, and.Lee. lnfaiitry-Diill-Sergcnnls-Stajor Francis and Brooks. Physical training—Sergeants-'-\lajor Russell, Spooner, and I'ankluirst. Captain Keenan and Lieutenant Jones' directed the boxing. They propose to arrange a tournament Inter. The n.e.o.'s aro displaying keen interest, in the training scheme, which is likely to have an important effect upon tlxycadet companies.
