SHORTAGE OF APPRENTICES

A shortage of apprentices and consequent present and prospective injury to industry in New Zealand was discussed at flic quarterly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce this evening. It was resolved to send tho following, resolution as a remit to the Chambers of Commcrco Conference :-"That the Government bo asked to confer with the trades unions affected with a view to securing altered conditions in awards as will lend to make good tho apprentices. -It was contended that, if something were not done tho time would soon conic when tradesmen would be unprocurable.
Work has begun on the foundations of the Sandhurst War Memorial, says the "Times," but when this memorial will bo completed depends largely <:n Ino country's recognition of what it owes to the 4000 regular officers, belonging for the most part to the glorious 1? irst seven "Divisions, whose devotion is be commemorated. 'X'lic form of memorial which has been chosen is tlie enlargement, in increased beauty, of the existing chnoel of tho Eoyal Military College. Tho estimated cost is d'oO.OOf), towards which .£5500 has been subscribed, exclusive of promised memorials to individual ofoeors and regiments.
