THEFTS ON THE NIAGARA
TWO STEWARDS SENT TO GAOL. By Telegraph-Press Association. Auckland, June 2. When detectives were investigating the theft from passengers on the Niagara they found silver valued at .E7 and serviette rings valued at .63 10s. planted. Two stewards confessed to the theft of these articles, and at the Police 1 Court to-day Charles .T. Harris, for theft of the silver, and William Harris, for theft of the serviette rings, were each sentenced to three months' hard labour.
No arrests in connection withihe thefts of clothing from the Niagara on Saturday have 'been made by the police. Tho thefts were committed just as the passengers had risen from dinner. In all six cabins were entered, and tho value of the clothing and other goods stolen is now estimated at .£3OO. As previously stated, a very valuable fur coat, which was among the stolen articles, was found floating in the harbour near tho Niagara, and (ho police incline to tho bolief that, fearing detection, the thieves dumped tho whole of the booty overboard when leaving. The detectives were on board the vessel late to-uight. A boy is reported to have found a lady's fur floating in the harbour. /
