HON. G. W. RUSSELL AND THE EPIDEMIC.
I By Teloeraph—Prcra Association. ' Christchurch, June 1. Referring to-day to the stranded Nefl Zealanders in Sydney andthequarantini restrictions in New Zealand, tho Hon. G. W. Russell said tho responsibility of protecting tho public against ft recrudescence of the epidemic Tested with tho Health Dopartment. Experience showed that oven where the baccili were known practically to have died out in one country, when they were taken to another country nmidst fresh surroundings _ they flamed up into virulence immediately. The New Zealand Government was not taking any chance in that respect. Ho deeply sympathised .with the stranded Now Zealanders. but what had been done was done for the good of tho country. Agents in Sydney and Melbourne have been instructed to give advances for New Zealanders' sustenance.
