CIVIC AFFAIRS
•MEETING OF THE COUNCIL, A meeting of the City Council was held last night. There were present the ■.Mayor. (Mr. J. P. Luke), and Counoillora G. Frost, C. B. Norwood, W. H. Ben. ttett, A., E. Atkinson, T. Forsyth, L. M'Kcnzie, J. 0. Shorlaiul, J. M. Dale, C. it: Chapman, J. Glover, J. Hutchi : son, P. Fraser, and R. A. Wright. , The council decided not to grant tho application of Lover Bros., of Petonc, for a supply of water from Wayiui-o-mata. The free use of the Town Hall and Concert Chamber was granted to tho Wellington Corporation Staff Club for their annual ball on July 10 next. The' Mayor was instructed to invite tho local bodies adjacent to the city to' confer with the Wellington City Council for the purpose of bringing down a scheme for the improvement of the main arterial roads. An allowance of £5 per annum wan granted to fire brigade firemen : in' the outlying districts towards the upkeep of telephones, as recommended by tljcFire Brigade superintendent. It was decided that the Hataitai Bowling Club be informed in reply to their request for an extension of time within which to remove the iron fence at their ground-,thnt immediate steps must' be taken bv them for the planting of a shelter so that tho original arrangements of an open fence can be brought into effect, and that unless such steps are immediately taken instructions will be given to have the iron fence removed. On the recommendation of tho Publio Health Committee it was agreed that in future all questions relating to the control of dairies, and air matters, relating to inspection of milk, etc., hitherto dealt with by the Public Health Committee, bc> transferred to the Milk Committee. It was agreed, on the recommendation of tho Reserves Committee that'the committee consider tlie' question of the erection of houses for caretakers of such of the city reserves'as do not at present provide eiieli accommodation. ■" The Mayor and Councillor Wright were appointed to represent the "council at a' conference of tramway authorities, to bo held in Wellington shortly. : '•■
