NOTES FROM VARIOUS CENTRES MANAWATU An informal gathering of citizens, over which Mr. C. F. Spooner presided, was held at Palmerston North this week for the purpose of discussing the establishment of the Y.M.C.A. in Palmerston North. Among those present were Mr. 0. M. Luke, of Welling!on, a member of tho National Committee, and Mr. E. C. Browiiell, national general secretary, and each delivered a short address descriptive of the organisation and its ramifications. According to Mr. Brownell. PalnuTston North was. the last of the secondary cities in New Zealand to mako a move in the direction of housing a Y.M.C.A. in its midst, and it was pointed out by Mr. Luke that the association should commend itself to all on account of moral and economic reasons. It was generally .agreed by those present that there had been a growing dena?)(! in Palmerston North the past few years for the establishment of such an institution as the Y.M.C.A. Preliminary to the launching of a big campaign for funds at a later date tho following office-bearers were appointed :—Convener, Mr. 11. Oram; secretary (pro tern). Mr. ,T. H. The lirst of a series of competitions for Mr. 11. L. Young's trophy was commenced this week by members of the Lin ton I'ifle Club. During the past few weeks tho shooting has been suffering on account of the rifles, but a, now set has been procured, and a marked improvement is expected to be the result from now. Land is changing hands of late in the Valley I'oad district. Mr. ,T. P. ,1 onsen has sold his farm and acquired a property near Morriiisville, in which district he will reside. Mr. H. Hart has also wild out. Kuox Bros, have sold part of their farm, and bought a property near Kiinbollon. Mr. A. Lawson has also sold out his Valley farm and taken up laud in the Kimbolton dis Met.

The house that had been used for holding school on Ridge lload. in the Apiti district,- has been destroyed by fire. Mr. G. C. Abraham, the teacher, was absent at the time, and he lost heavily by the fire, tile origin of which is unknown. A welcome-homo reception and dance is to be tendered to the following soldiers by the residents of Apiti to-mor-row night; Lance-Corporals W. Ilogan niul W. Duncan and Privates A. Yetdliani. A.
