THE MILK SUPPLY
Sir,—l have noticed that His Worship the Mayor of Wellington, who is sitting upon some Government commission for the improvement of the masses, is hint ing—nj.nd you, only hinting—about compelling dairy farmers, within a radius of Wellington, to supply town folk with milk for consumption iaistead of selling it to cheese and other'factories.
Dairymen are not all rogues, but officious inspectors, whoso number is now legion, evidently regard them as such, and it is not surprising that respectablo people are inclined to light shy of such Jiifiks-in-oflice regardless of the small additional sum they receive for the town supply. One has some delicacy in suggesting an alternative to His Worship's drastic proposals, seeing that so many children are dependent upon the supply of cows' milk, but Dr. Truby King is not so backward in strongly recommending mothers to fall back upon the natural font, and it is a pit)- our Government is temporarily deprived of his semiccs, as it appears to me there is even greater need of outspoken medical men here than at Home, where we are told Dr. lung's candid vtalks with mothers are so much appreciated. Dairymen and daii'ywoinen are not to be regarded as "hewers of wood «ml drawers uly water" ior the multitude, ynd if compulsion is to be -resorted to, to provide a food for infants, 1 would recommend His Worship, in a'A seriousness, to try it in another direction, and hope he is courageous enough to do it—l am, etc., DAIBY FARMER.
