TREATMENT OF RETURNED SOLDIERS
Sir,—Mr. Fairchild continuea his "grouse." I desire to draw attention to several remarks in his second production. (I) "Headquarters cared not a. jot for the welfare of the privates' teeth or anything else," and (2) "that tho policy of the Pensions Board is dictated by the Minister of Defence." Mr.,l ,, airchiid lias nover usen in a position to form any opinion on these two points. They are both contrary to fact. His action in making statements like these speaks for itself, and I pass them over without further comment. He he sometimes worked sixteen hours a day, and deplores his low salary. I know men, men in the ranks, who earned more in civil life than Mr. Fairciiild, who cheerfully sacrificed this,to do their duty, some for ss. and some for Is, Gd. per day, ami they often worked 24 hours in the day. 1 did myself many times. Many liiado the great sacrifice. Many others—like ■ myself—have come back minus a leg, an arm, an ?ye, and many worse than that, but they do not spend their time in appealing to the poople of America, or the men and women of New Zealand, or the Minister of Defence, for sympathy, kindness, or material hell). Efo also refers to the question of men requiring artificial teeth not being allowed to leave tho Peninsula. • Mr. ItairchiUl should know the reason for this order as well as. the -writer, and be has misrepresented the true position. ' Does Mr. Fairchild realise that he is not the only man 'who has spent three, years at the war. and has to re-establish himself? Good God! when I think of sonra of my mates and what they have suffered -physically (to say nothing of cash), and I road this "grouse," I feel it difficult to restrain myself.—l am, etc., ANOTHER DIGGER..
