THE USE OF PASSPORTS

Sir,—l see a suggestion in to-days paper that the system.. of obtaining passports may be continued. Iβ this to keep on officials at present, employed and to spend unnecessary public money ? New Zealand prides herself on being a free country, and what' business is it of any Government if its citizens choos - - to livo elsewhere? This restriction should only be applied to criminals and maniac*. The passport was instituted as .1 war precaution, and primarily to stop shirkers leaving the country. Now that the war is over, Mr. Massey, on his return, should be asked to remove.such a senseless restriction. People are calpchieed like children and asked all sorta of personal questions; in fact, o,ne would think New Zealand was EuEsia in that respect. I hope our Mayor will See that this passport annoyance is stopped, and the people of New Zealand are treated like ■ responsible human beings.—l am. etc.,

A PATRIOT. ■ fOur correspondent plainly does not realise that the passport system is fo> tho protection of the public, and is us useful now to check the movement, of. undesirables as in war time."]-
