THE INDIAN RIOTS
SERIOUS NATURE ADMITTED. London, May IC. Reports from India show that the- recent a'ising was serious. It was well organised, and the moderation of the authorities at Delhi encouraged tho mob to extreme violence at Lahore and Amritsar, where several whites were killed. At both places the military was compelled to use severe repressive measures, and the great mob was overawed. In ono quarter in Amritsar ma-chine-guns were played on them. The Ghurkas could not Iμ restrained, and a thousand lives were lost. There wag equally severe repression fit Lahore," where it is believed four thousand were killed or wounded altogether. This energy was not expected by the leaders, and the difficulty simmered down.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
