Entries for the Winter Meeting of tha Napier Park, Racing; Club close on Friday. Acceptances for all events at the Horowhenuti Meeting are due on I'riday at 8 p.m. The Sunedin sportsman Mr. U. Actou Adams was. represented by the junipers Grafton Tot and Lochella at Wanganui, nnd both gave fair showings. Providing they are not handicapped by inartisU.e riding the pair should get on the winning list before they return south.
The Hallowmas filly Scasprite was only started once at the Wanganui Meeting. This was hi the Farewell Hack Handicap, in which after' getting out badly alio'beat all but Astinome. SeaspnW has inherited her dam's (Seaspray) pace. The last-named was only a pony, but she could gallop fast. The 'J,Wtahi-Carterton. Meeting will be held on tho Clareville Racecourse tomorrow*. Wellington sportsmen who in.tend making, tho trip can travel up Ijj the mail train leaving Lauibton' Station at 7.50 a.m. The? return journey can be mado by a train leaving Clareville at 5 p.m. ! Endure, winner of the Farewell Hack Handicap at Wanganui in 1917 «iid 1915, was saddled up in the 6ame event on Saturday, but. though- over £WQQ .was invested on his chance the little-raced chestnut at no stage threatened danger, and he finished out of a place.
The disappointing Signorella (SignorCrucinelln) is to be tried over hurdles. The Waverley-trained gelding lias been n complete failure on the flat, but he may do better at his now game. • Many instances can he owoted of horses being useless in one department, but proving top-hole performers in another. Polthogue could not win till he was tried at steepleehasing, but now he bids fair to take high honours as a 'chaser. Since ho left Riccarton this month )Sore lias contested four steeplechases. His record is a consistent one, for he, has scored once and been placed third three times. The Calibre gelding does not seem to be in the first class, but he has a very handy weight in the Great Northern Steeplechase, and mnv furnish u surprise, lor lit h<is had tho right sort of preparation. , EuVipos, in tho same stable as Bore, is also puttjng up a consistent record since leaving Riccarton. ' At Wanganui he gavo a faultless exhibition of jumping ou both days, and this materially assisted his victories, liulli horses liavb earned penalties at Ellerslie. Bore will have to shoulder an Additional Mb. in tint Steeplechase, making, his weight 1(M. Mb., and Eitripos has earned a 71b. penalty, making his wi-ight list. ill), in the Hurdles.'. Bon Spec, who had to lie pulled out of tho Easter Handicap at the recent C.J.O. Meeting, owing to a severe cold, Ims gradually got worse, and at present', is a wreck, suffering from strangles, says a southern writer. . A veterinary surgeon is assisting tho Boniforui—Signal gelding every day, as he is in a critical slate.
Mr. J. F. lieid, of Burnside, has decided to send three yearlings to bo put up to auction at Mr. H. Fricdlander's sale- during tire week of the Dunedin Winter Meeting. Thoy are a gelding by Solferino—Raid, a filly by Elaine, and a gelding by Dannie Chiel— Northern Light. '
While galloping at Wiugatui on Saturdap Burke's Drift jarred one of his fetlocks, and was decidedly lame afterwards. He will hiivo to be spelled.
Mr. J. Bull's horses, Master , Lupin and All Over, reached Ellerslie yesterday. Though so far ho has not jumped any brush fences it is intended to start .Master Lupin in both big jumping events ut -the Auckland lincing Club's whiter gathering, and with that end in view he will probably make a tour of the Ellerslie liiil this morning.
Tlii! display of Sir Fisher over i\c Bte«!pluciinso course at Ellerslic yestcrday rv«!> a very satisfactory one for a» unschooled horso, and it he. gets through the liui'.'.lu race without any weakness manifesting itself lie may. be a dangerous candidate in the Steeplechase iu ho is a good etuyw.
